Everybody's Hero The Jackie Robinson Story Mad River Theatre Works Tuesday, February 9, 2009 – 10:00 AM
Jackie Robinson, one of the most significant baseball players in the history of the game, began as a high school sports star in California. The play starts there and jumps forward in time showing vital moments of Robinson's life including scenes when he was a player in the Negro Leagues, being signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers and the resistance he faced from his teammates as the first African-American to break the color barrier in the sport known as "America's Pastime." Critical to the story are the racial slurs Robinson endured. Through a powerful song called "Words Are Alive," Mad River Theatre Works demonstrates how hurtful and destructive language can be and how facing these obstacles with dignity and restraint shaped Robinson's character until he eventually became "everybody's hero."
